Registering your Clivia cultivar is an important step in preserving its identity and contributing to the official Clivia Society Register. This guide outlines the rules, naming standards, and submission requirements to ensure your registration is accurate and approved without delays.
Clivia Register Rules
To maintain consistency and accuracy, all registrations must follow the official guidelines below.
A registrant is any applicant, (not necessarily the breeder/owner of the plant in question) who wishes to register a cultivar, while not wrongfully claiming they are the original breeder/owner of said plant. The registrant does not need to be the breeder or raiser.
Parentage details are preferred but not essential.
The cultivar description may include any show results, publications where photographs have appeared, and also the meaning behind the proposed name.Parentage details are preferred but not essential.
Offsets/clones of a registered cultivar cannot be re-registered under a different name.
There is no cost associated with registering a Clivia cultivar or cultivar group.
Historically/genetically significant cultivars may be registered by the Clivia Society Registrar Committee, where the original breeder of the cultivar is deceased/untraceable.
Should a dispute arise over a specific registration by a party directly affected (breeder, family of deceased breeder of the registered plant in question), the registration will be removed from the registry until the dispute is resolved.
Cultivar Naming Guidelines
Names are registered according to the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants and the standards agreed upon by the Clivia Society.
Please ensure your proposed name follows these rules:
No botanical, Latin names, common names of other plants. May not include nursery names.
Only these punctuation marks are permitted: apostrophe, comma, hyphen, full stop, and up to two exclamation marks.
Avoid abbreviations, titles, and diacritical signs where possible.
The name must not exaggerate the plant’s qualities or duplicate existing registered names.
Avoid series of letters or numbers (e.g., “AB123”).
Limited to 30 characters (excluding spaces). Each name should begin with a capital letter.
Prohibited words include: cross, cultivar, form, hybrid, grex, improved, maintenance, group, mixture, mutant, seedling, sport, strain, selection, transformed or variety.
Common names of Clivia species are not permitted.

Each photo must be under 2MB and ideally sized 800 × 600px.
At least one photo must show the full umbel, and one must show a single flower.
Submit Your Application

Once you submit your form, you’ll receive a confirmation email.
The registrar will review your entry and contact you if additional information is required.
When approved, your cultivar will appear in the official Clivia Register.
